Amputee Physiotherapy

Amputee Physiotherapy is the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients who have had a limb or digit amputated. They may have undergone an amputation due to:
  • Cardiovascular disease (diabetes)
  • Infection
  • Deformities
  • Trauma
Amputee Physiotherapy will aim at improving the structures around the amputation site, by maintaining function of the muscles, joints and soft tissue of the adjacent joint. Amputee Physiotherapy can provide treatment and advice prior to the amputation to help prepare the patient and the structures which will be affected directly by the surgery.

Amputee Physiotherapists will provide the following service:
  • Pre surgical advice and treatment (if planned amputation)
  • Post operative bed exercises in first couple of days
  • Transfer practice
  • Wheel chair provision
  • Mobility and gait re-education
  • Prosthetic advice
  • Strengthening and stretching exercises
  • Pain Management
Amputee Physiotherapy is a specialised physiotherapy service aimed at improving the quality of life of the patient, restoring normal movement, maximising independence, optimising the healing process of the amputation site and improving mobility.
