Chronic Pain Physiotherapy

Chronic Pain Physiotherapy is aimed at those who have severe pain and have had it for a long period of time. Their pain may be due to a number of reasons which are affecting their ability to participate in activities of daily living. Some of the causes of chronic pain include:
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Low back pain
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Phantom limb pain
  • Neuropathic pain
Chronic Pain Physiotherapy will focus on providing the individual with coping mechanism and self-management strategies. This can be done through treatments from the chronic pain team which can include Physiotherapists, Doctors, Psychiatrists and Occupational Therapists. The team will look at all aspects of the individual’s life and work with them to provide management strategies.

Chronic Pain Physiotherapy will offer treatments and advice to those who are suffering from chronic pain. Some of the treatments can include:
  • Pacing advice
  • Pain management
  • Electrotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Exercise therapy
Chronic Pain Physiotherapy is an area where physiotherapists can specialise. Patients who require a physiotherapy service due to chronic pain will require other elements of treatments and a holistic approach may be needed by the Physiotherapist, within a multi-disciplinary team.
