Pain Management
Pain management helps a patient to manage their chronic pain which they have usually been experiencing for a long period of time. Pain management can include the input from the following health care professionals:
- Physiotherapist
- Nurse
- Doctor
- Psychologist / counsellor
- Occupational therapist
Within the pain management team they will work together with the patient to enable them to cope with the pain experienced and to improve independence with activities of daily living. The pain management team will provide the following services to the patient:
- Medication review
- Psychology assessment
- Physiotherapy assessment
- Acupuncture
- Pacing activities advice
Dependent upon the presenting condition will depend upon which services the patient will need within pain management. Not all patients will require all services of the pain management team but a lot will benefit from the pain management physiotherapist. The physiotherapists may provide the following treatments:
- Exercises
- Massage
- Acupuncture
- Pacing activities advice
- Pain management strategies
- Electrotherapy
The treatment choices will be dependent upon the physiotherapist’s professional judgement from the initial assessment.
