Physiotherapy for Abdominal Surgery

Abdominal surgery is a procedure which involves entering the body through an incision in the abdominal region. Dependent upon the reason and the procedure type will depend on the size of the incision. Abdominal surgery involves the interruption of all of the main musculature used to stabilise the core. There are a variety of different incisions which the surgeon can choose from, some of the procedure only requires a small puncture, and therefore recovery time will be quicker. Some of the main reasons for abdominal surgery are:
  • Appendectomy
  • Laparoscopy
  • Caesarean
  • Laparotomy
Abdominal surgery can take months to fully recover from if a large incision is made as this can cause a lot of trauma to the abdominal walls. The core muscles and tissues will be re-stitched but the healing process can take weeks to bond together properly and regain strength. Physiotherapy can help with the healing process post surgery. Some of the treatments Physiotherapist can provide to help can include:
  • Exercises
  • Scar massage
  • Electrotherapy
  • Post operative mobilisation
  • Post operative advice (pacing activities)
These treatments are aimed at promoting the healing process and regaining the independence of the individual.
