Physiotherapy for Ankle Pain
Ankle pain is due to an injury from around the ankle region. Sports men and women have an increased risk of sustaining an ankle injury. The ankle is prone to injury when the individual is landing on the ball of their foot (pointed toes / plantar flexed), this increases the vulnerability of the ankle as this position is when the ankle is at its most unstable. Ankle injuries can include a variety of causes, some of the most common are:
- Ligament sprain
- Ligament rupture
- Achilles tendonitis
- Fractured ankle
- Stress fracture (commonly 5th metatarsal)
- Osteoarthritis
These injuries can cause the individual a great amount of ankle pain. Ankle pain can be treated conservatively and surgically if necessary. The conservative method may include physiotherapy for the ankle pain alongside pain relief. Some of the physiotherapy treatments for ankle pain can include:
- RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation)
- Massage (friction)
- Range of movement exercises
- Stretching and strengthening exercise
- Electrotherapy
- Acupuncture
- Splinting / bracing
- Walking aid provision
Ankle pain can be debilitating as it is a weight bearing joint and can affect a person’s mobility and independence.
