Physiotherapy for Ankle Surgery

Ankle surgery is a surgical procedure which is done on the ankle joint. This can be done under a general or a local anaesthetic dependent upon the surgeon and anaesthetists judgement. Ankle surgery is done for a number of reasons. Some of the main reasons are:
  • Osteocondral defect
  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Bunions
  • Achilles repairs
  • Ankle instability
Ankle surgery can help to increase range of movement, decrease pain and improve function. Dependent upon the reason for surgery will depend upon what type of procedure is done. For arthritic ankles joint replacements and cleaning of the joint can be done. All ankle surgery will result in the following symptoms:
  • Pain
  • Decreased range of movement
  • Swelling
  • Heat
  • Loss of strength
  • Altered gait pattern
These symptoms can be assisted with the treatment of Physiotherapy. Physiotherapy can provide treatments and education prior to ankle surgery and post operatively. Some of the treatments available are:
  • Ice therapy
  • Exercises (range of movement, strength and proprioception)
  • Gait re-education
  • Walking aid provision
  • Electrotherapy
  • Acupuncture
These treatments will be dependent upon the stage of healing the individual is at and the requirements of the surgeon.
