Physiotherapy for Babies



Physiotherapists may choose to specialise in paediatrics. This usually involves the physiotherapist completing their junior rotations and then specialising into the area of children and babies. Many babies will need the input of a qualified experienced physiotherapist. Some of the common problems which physiotherapists will treat babies for include:
  • Talipes
  • Abnormal movement
  • Abnormal tone high / low
These problems can affect a babies development therefore requires a physiotherapy assessment. A physiotherapist will provide a comprehensive assessment and offer a treatment plan. The physiotherapist will educated the parents / guardians of the baby and can even show them physiotherapy for babies so they can treat their baby in between physiotherapy sessions. Some of the treatments can include:
  • Bracing / taping / advice on casting
  • Restoring and stimulating normal movement
  • Stretching (passive)
  • Equipment provision
Physiotherapy for babies can last into their childhood with regular reviews to alter their physiotherapy programme to meet their needs as they alter and as they develop.
