Physiotherapy for Buttock Pain
Buttock Pain can have several causes either from injury or repetitive overuse of the surrounding structures. Buttock pain can cause the individual a great amount of pain and discomfort due to the location. Some of the common causes of buttock pain are:
- Sciatica
- Referred pain
- Muscle strain / tears
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Tendinopathy (hamstring)
All of these causes of buttock pain can be treated with a course of physiotherapy. Buttock pain can prevent a person from participating in normal activities of daily living pain free. Buttock pain can even affect a person’s gait and if abnormal gait is establish for a period of time could lead to other musculoskeletal injuries. Buttock pain can be treated with physiotherapy which may include:
- Stretching exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Joint range of movement exercises
- Joint mobilisations
- Massage
- Electrotherapy
- Gait re-education
- Walking aid provision
Dependent upon the cause of buttock pain and the outcome of the assessment will depend upon the physiotherapist’s choice of treatment for the buttock pain. The physiotherapist will help to alleviate pain, restore normal movement, function and gait pattern.
