Physiotherapy for Chest Surgery

Chest surgery is a surgical procedure which involves opening the chest cavity. There are many different procedures which can be classified as chest surgery, involving the lungs, heart and soft tissue around the chest cavity. Some of the most common chest surgical procedures are:
  • Heart bypass
  • Lobectomy
  • Valve replacement
  • VATS talc Pleurodesis
  • Pneumonectomy
  • Heart transplant
These procedures are complex but are done regularly by chest surgeons. Chest surgery has a massive effect on the body as the organs which keep the body alive are being interfered with. This can seem daunting for patients but most chest surgery is a common procedure done in state of the art theatres by experienced surgeons. Physiotherapy plays a vital role post chest surgery. Some of the interventions which are used post chest surgery are:
  • Chest Physiotherapy
  • Mobility
  • Bed exercises
  • Chair exercises
  • Exercises advice
  • Cardiac rehabilitation (several weeks post surgery for cardiac procedures)
It is important to restore normal function after chest surgery as the lung have been artificially ventilated and the cardiac muscle may be been interfered with, therefore strength will be decreased. Physiotherapist will provide an appropriate rehabilitation programme post chest surgery.
