Physiotherapy for Children

Physiotherapy from children can include children from around the age of four until the child is classed as an adult at eighteen. There can be a large variety of reasons for why a child may require physiotherapy within this age group. Some of the reasons for physiotherapy for children can include:
  • Neurological conditions
  • Chest conditions (cystic fibrosis)
  • Delay in milestone development
  • Abnormal gait
  • The clumsy child (dyspraxia)
  • Injury rehabilitation (fractures, sprains and strains)
These are a variety of conditions which affect the child’s normal movement. Physiotherapy for children usually requires a paediatric physiotherapist but can sometimes fall into the category of musculoskeletal rehabilitation by a physiotherapist who treats mainly adults as the principles of treatment are similar. Some of the treatments can include the following:
  • Exercise (stretching, range of movement and strengthening)
  • Gait re-education
  • Co-ordination
  • Pain management
  • Chest clearance and breathing techniques
  • Equipment and walking aid provision
These treatments will vary depending upon the requirements and needs identified at the initial assessment and can alter throughout the rehabilitation course due to development and improvement / decline in the presenting condition.
