Physiotherapy for Elbow Pain
Elbow pain can be caused due to a traumatic injury or due to a repetitive overuse injury. Elbow pain can prevent an individual form participating in daily activities as they normally would pain free. There are a large number of causes which could induce elbow pain. Some of the most common causes of elbow pain can include:
- Fall / contusion
- Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
- Medical epicondylitis (golfers)
- Nerve entrapment
- Fracture
- Dislocation
- Ligament sprain
As the elbow allows a great deal of function with the upper limb, every movement can cause discomfort to the injury site. Elbow pain can be treated with a course of physiotherapy if the cause is not due to a new fracture (pre immobilisation). Some of the physiotherapy interventions which may control the elbow pain can include:
- Deep frication massage
- Range of movement exercises
- Stretching exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Acupuncture
- Steroid injections
- Electrotherapy
Physiotherapy will aim at alleviating pain, increasing range of movement and strength, optimising independence and maximising function when treating elbow pain.
