Physiotherapy for Groin Pain

Many athletes suffer with groin pain; this can have an effect on, and even prevent them from training and competing in competitions. Groin pain has a variety of causes and can be due to a traumatic accident or an overuse injury through repetitive tasks. Some of the common causes of groin pain are:
  • Adductor strain / rupture
  • Tendonitis of the adductor muscle attachments
  • Hernia
  • Osteitis Pubis
  • Iliopsoas Muscle inflammation / rupture
  • Gilmores Groin
These are the common causes of groin pain and can have a major effect on a person’s gait which can cause other abnormal movements which can lead to other injuries. Physiotherapy can offer a comprehensive assessment to determine the cause of the groin pain and offer an intervention. Some of the common interventions in a groin pain rehabilitation programme include:
  • Exercise
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Electrotherapy
  • Manual therapy
  • Massage
These interventions can help speed the healing process and optimise the patient’s potential. The aim of Physiotherapy would be to alleviate pain and optimise injury potential. This may be done through a combination of the above treatments.
