Physiotherapy for Groin Surgery
Groin surgery is surgery which occurs around the groin, hip and inside of the upper thigh. There are a number of reasons as to why people undergo surgery here. Some of the most common procedures done by orthopaedic consultants are for:
- Hernia
- Gilmore groin
- Muscle repair
- Tendon repair
- Ligament repair
- Nerve and vascular compression
The orthopaedic consultant and anaesthetist will decide upon the type of anaesthetic used. Some prefer to use a local, whilst other will use a general anaesthetic. Both types of anaesthetic come with risks but will be decided upon by the patient, consultant and anaesthetist. Post groin surgery a rehabilitation programme will be needed. A Physiotherapist will offer a comprehensive assessment and upon discussion with the patient will formulate a treatment plan. These treatment plan will focus on the following:
- Reducing swelling
- Reducing pain
- Improving function
- Restoring normal movement
- Restoring normal gait
- Restoring and maintaining strength
These areas will be targeted through a variety of treatments which has been specifically prescribed for the patient post groin surgery. Some of the treatments may include the following:
- Pain management
- Electrotherapy
- Acupuncture
- Strengthening exercises
- Stretching and range of movement exercises
- Ice therapy
- Gait re-education and walking aid provision as required
These treatments may be combined within the treatment plan and the home exercise programme.
