Physiotherapy for Head Surgery
Head surgery is when a surgeon operates on a person’s head. There are many different procedures which are classified as head surgery. Specialised consultants will perform this type of surgery with their expertise team, in a state of the art theatre. Some of the reasons for a person to undergo head surgery are:
- Release pressure within the head
- Removal of lumps and bumps for cosmetic reasons
- Drain fluid of the brain
- Removal of cancer tumours
- Coiling aneurysms
Surgery around the head is a very delicate procedure as the brain is vulnerable once an incision has been made on the head. Head surgery will require wound care and precaution if the bones where separated as this is a fracture site, therefore increasing the risk for head injury post surgery. Head surgery potentially could use the assistance of a physiotherapist if there are any motor control deficits or mobility problems post head surgery. This could include the following treatments:
- Gait re-education
- Mobility progression
- Neurological rehabilitation
- Bed exercises
- Passive and active exercises
All these treatments are dependent upon what head surgery has been done and what effect the surgery has had on the patient.
