Physiotherapy for Hip Surgery

Hip surgery is a surgical procedure which is done on and around the hip joint. These procedures can be done under a general or local anaesthetic. This is dependent upon the patient’s preferences and the anaesthetist’s and orthopaedic consultant’s clinical judgements. There are a number of reasons as to why patients undergo hip surgery. Some of the procedures are:
  • Arthritis
  • Resurfacing the joints
  • Hip replacement
  • Muscle repair
  • Ligament repair
  • Removal of loose body
  • Fracture stabilisation
Hip surgery is an invasive treatment and can take a good period of time to recover from it. This can be done with the assistance of a physiotherapist. Some hip operations come with precautions after the surgery. This is to help promote the healing process and prevent injuries from occurring. Some of the physiotherapeutic interventions which may be used for the rehabilitation post hip surgery are:
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Gait re-education
  • Walking aid provision
These treatments may be combined in a personalised rehabilitation programme. Depending on the type of hip surgery will depend on the type of exercises which can be done as certain procedure will advice that certain movements are avoided. The physiotherapist will provide a personalised rehabilitation programme.
