Physiotherapy for Knee Pain
Knee pain can occur at any point around the knee joint. This is a common injury site as it is a main weight bearing joint, therefore can be susceptible to injury and wear and tear. Knee pain can prevent an individual from participating in normal activities of daily living pain free, such as descending the stairs. Some of the common causes of knee pain are:
- Meniscal tears
- Arthritis
- Muscle weakness
- Patella maltracking
- Ligament sprains / ruptures
- Muscle tears
- Fat pad inflammation
All of these causes of knee pain can be debilitating, causing a great deal of pain to the individual. These injuries can occur due to a variety of reasons which may be due to underlying weakness. A course of Physiotherapy can help to alleviate symptoms but cannot always solve the problem if a surgical intervention is required. Some of the treatments available for knee pain are:
- Meniscal removal
- Ligament repair
- Joint replacement
- Exercise
- Acupuncture
- Electrotherapy
- Heat and cold therapy
- Massage
- Manual therapy
A combination of surgical intervention (depending upon the cause of knee pain) and Physiotherapy management can help to alleviate pain and optimise healing. Physiotherapy can help to promote joint health and help to prevent further injuries for those injuries which are not suitable for surgical intervention.
