Physiotherapy for Knee Surgery
An orthopaedic consultant will perform knee surgery. There are a number of reasons that lead people to having knee surgery. Knee surgery can be done under a local or general anaesthetic depending on the patient and the medical practitioner’s judgement. Some of the common procedures are:
- Meniscal removal / tidy
- Ligament repair ACL / PCL / MCL / LCL
- Knee replacement
- Knee revision
These surgical procedures will have an effect on a persons gait and therefore may require physiotherapy. Knee surgery will have the following effect on the joint:
- Decreased range of movement
- Increased pain
- Swelling
- Muscle weakness
- Decreased proprioception
These symptoms are temporary after knee surgery and with the assistance of a physiotherapist and an individual rehabilitation programme symptoms should improve. Some of the treatments which may be offered by a physiotherapist for the rehabilitation post knee surgery can include:
- Pain management
- Electrotherapy
- Exercises (strengthening, range of movement, proprioception)
- Acupuncture
- Gait re-education
- Walking aid provision
These treatments will be given upon the clinical judgement of the physiotherapist and the consultant’s protocols.
