Physiotherapy for Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is a large problem with the general population. There usually is not one known cause, therefore often termed Non-specific lower back pain. The majority of the causes of lower back pain are not traumatic. Some of the common causes of lower back pain can include:
- Muscle spasm
- Muscle strain / rupture
- Myofascial tension
- Disc protrusion
- Postural stress
- Fractures
- Nerve impingement
Some of these problems which cause lower back pain can be treated with physiotherapy to help alleviate symptoms. There are a large amount of treatments to select to help improve lower back pain as this can be debilitating, preventing individuals from participating in their normal activities pain free. Lower back pain had been linked to a person’s occupation. One of the most common occupations which have been linked to lower back pain is jobs which have sedentary roles. Some of the treatments on offer for lower back pain are:
- Exercise
- Manual therapy
- Massage
- Myofascial tissue release
- Postural advice
- electrotherapy
Some of these treatments can help to alleviate pain enabling the individual to participate in normal activities with a decrease amount or no lower back pain. Self management strategies may also be taught if appropriate so the individual can manage their own symptoms.
