Physiotherapy for Lower Back Surgery

Lower back surgery is surgery which occurs within the Lumbar Spine. This can be done by an orthopaedic consultant. They can sometimes be specialised in lower back surgery. Depending upon the patients request and health will depend upon whether the consultant and anaesthetist will use a general aesthetic or a local aesthetic for the surgery. Some of the procedures done for the lower back can include:
  • Stabilising fractures
  • Fusing vertebrae (pain management)
  • Foramenotomy (releasing compressed nerves)
  • Discectomy
  • Laminectomy
  • Spinal disc replacement
The consultant will try and manage these types of lower back surgery conservatively prior to taking invasive measures such as surgery. If the conservative management does not work then they will opt for lower back surgery. This can be a long recovery and a rehabilitation programme may be needed. If a rehabilitation programme is required they will be referred to physiotherapy to help deal with the effects of the surgery. Some of the treatments which can be used by a physiotherapist for lower back surgery are:
  • Range of movement exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Pain management
  • Mobilisations
  • Electrotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
These treatments will be used upon the clinical judgement of the experienced physiotherapist.
