Physiotherapy for Lower Leg Surgery

Lower leg surgery is surgery which occurs between the knee and the ankle. This is a common site for surgery. Depending upon the patient’s requests and the clinical judgement of the orthopaedic consultant and the anaesthetist will depend upon the type of anaesthetic they will use. The options are to use either a local aesthetic where the part of the body has no feeling or a general where the patient is completely made unconscious. Some of the most common types of lower leg surgery are:
  • Fasciotomy
  • Fracture stabilisation
  • Manipulation
  • Muscle repair
  • Achilles repair
  • Tendon repair
  • Amputation
These types of lower leg surgery are common and may require rehabilitation. This can mean a referral to physiotherapy is appropriate. After lower leg surgery muscles can waste and scar tissue forms which can restrict movement and function on tissues gliding on each other effectively. Physiotherapy can offer different interventions which help to speed the recovery time and optimise the healing process. Some of the different interventions are:
  • Massage
  • Gait re-education
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrotherapy
These treatments will be used as a combination during a treatment session and as a home exercise programme under the clinical judgement of the physiotherapist.
