Physiotherapy for Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain is pain around the lower back and pelvis. Pelvic pain can be referred from the lower back. Pelvic pain can be caused by a number of different reasons. Some of the common causes of pelvic pain are:
- Stress fracture
- Osteitis pubis
- Sacroiliac dysfunction
- Stress fractures
- Bursitis
- Muscle strain / tear
These causes can be due to an acute injury or due to the stress of overuse and repetitive movements going through the joints. Pelvic pain can have an effect on a person’s ability to function on a day to day basis as movement can be restricted in injured areas. Treatments which may benefit pelvic pain can include:
- Exercise
- Manual therapy
- Massage
- Electrotherapy
- Biomechanical assessment and gait re-education
- Heat and cold therapy
- Postural advice
These techniques will be decided on by the Physiotherapist upon assessment. They will then develop a rehabilitation programme aimed at alleviating the pelvic pain and promoting healing. Some of the techniques such as postural advice and exercise can be used as a self-management strategy once treatment has ended to help prevent further pelvic pain.
