Physiotherapy for Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain is commonly an acute accident in the sporting population, especially contact sports. In the sedentary population shoulder pain is usually due to repetitive movements and postural adaptations. Some of the main injuries which produce shoulder pain are:
- Shoulder dislocation
- Fractures
- Tendonitis
- Impingement
- Muscle strain / tears
- Postural adaptations
These injuries can cause the individual a great deal of discomfort and shoulder pain. Shoulder pain can prevent an athlete from competing and training and a member of the general public form participating in activities of daily living pain free. Physiotherapy can often help to alleviate shoulder pain through a variety of interventions. Some of the common treatment modalities used for shoulder pain can include:
- Exercise
- Massage
- Electrotherapy
- Surgical intervention
- Manual therapy
- Acupuncture
- Postural advice
These techniques and interventions facilitate healing and help to decrease shoulder pain. After Physiotherapy assessment a rehabilitation programme will be established to optimise healing, increase function, decrease pain and promote healing. Some of the techniques can be used as part of a self-management strategy within the home environment.
