Physiotherapy for Shoulder Surgery
Shoulder surgery is a procedure which occurs around the shoulder and the end of the shoulder girdle. Shoulder surgery is a common procedure which is suggested if a conservative approach does not seem to be working. Some of the common types and reasons for shoulder surgery are:
- Rotator cuff muscle repair
- Decompression
- Total shoulder replacement
- Partial shoulder replacement
- Fracture stabilisation
- Labral tears and slap lesions (shoulder instability)
- Impingement relief
Shoulder surgery is a common procedure and the rehabilitation process can be a long process as the surgeon can have lengthy protocols, including immobilisation to ensure the healing of the tissues is complete prior to rehabilitation. This helps with the stability of the shoulder for the rehabilitation process. Some of the symptoms which may be experienced post shoulder surgery are:
- Increased pain
- Decreased range of movement
- Swelling
- Decreased strength
These symptoms will be addressed through the rehabilitation process with the physiotherapist. Some of the treatments and interventions the physiotherapist will offer for rehabilitation post shoulder surgery can include:
- Range of movement exercises (gravity assisted)
- Strengthening exercises
- Pain management
- Electrotherapy
- Acupuncture
- Massage
- Stretching exercises
These will be combined throughout the rehabilitation programme as the physiotherapist sees appropriate in accordance with the consultant’s protocols.
