What is a Sprain?



A Sprain is a tear to a ligament fibre as a result of an excessive force causing a ligament to stretch, twist, partially or completely tear. Sprains are very common amongst the sporting population with a course of rehabilitation from a physiotherapist a person with a strain is usually able resume to normal activities quickly.

Types of Sprains



Sprains can be graded into three categories:
  • Grade 1 – Minimal damage done to the ligaments
  • Grade 2 – Moderate severity, partial tears of the ligaments but no great instability noticed
  • Grade 3 – Severe, full tear of the ligaments, instability noticeable
