Physiotherapy for Strains

What is a Strain?

A Strain occurs when a muscle is excessively stretched and muscle fibres or tendons become damaged and torn. A strain is a common injury which can cause a great deal of pain to the individual preventing them from playing sports and even have difficulty with some activities of daily living. Physiotherapy treatment can assist with a speedy recovery. Please contact us or call 0161 883 0077 to arrange an appointment.

Types of Strains

Muscle strains can be split into different grades to differentiate the severity of the injury. The grades are:
  • Grade 1 – mild strain where approximately less than 5% of fibres are damaged
  • Grade 2 - moderate strain where a larger proportion of muscle fibres are damaged but there is not complete rupture. This grade required three to six weeks rest period.
  • Grade 3 – severe strain, there is a complete rupture of the muscle. A muscle rupture will require surgery and at least 3 month rehabilitation period.

Manchester Physio has specialised physiotherapists who are highly experienced at treating muscle strains. The most common strains seen are:
  • Quadriceps strain
  • Hamstring strain

How Physiotherapy helps Strains

Physiotherapy can help rehabilitate each grade of strain. If the strain is not rehabilitated fully and the individual continues to play sport or participate in strenuous activities the strain could deteriorate. This could increase the classification from a Grade one to a Grade two or even Grade Three. The benefits of physiotherapy for muscle strains are:
  • Quicker recovery
  • Decrease pain
  • Increase self-confidence in the injury site
  • Increase strength
  • Provide self-management strategies
  • Return to sport quicker
  • Optimise healing

What Physiotherapy treatments can be expected for a Muscle Strain?

Manchester Physio can offer many different treatments which would be of benefit for the healing process and rehabilitation period. The following treatments help optimise healing and speed recovery:
  • Electrotherapy (LIPUS, PSWD, Interferential, TENS)
  • Massage
  • Ice therapy
  • Balance Exercises
  • Proprioceptive Exercise
  • Strengthening Exercises
