Physiotherapy for Toddlers

Physiotherapy for toddlers included the treatment of infants from around the age of 1. Some toddlers will have had physiotherapy as babies whilst others may be new to the treatment. There can be many reasons for the requirement of physiotherapy for toddlers. Some of the reasons and conditions which may require physiotherapy can include:
  • Abnormal development
  • Abnormal gait
  • Tip toe walkers
  • Neurological conditions (cerebral palsy)
  • Abnormal tone (high or low)
  • Chest physiotherapy (cystic fibrosis)
These conditions and problems may only be noticed when the child does not reach motor development milestones. Therefore the requirement of a physiotherapist for the toddler may be needed for treatment. Some of the treatments which the physiotherapist may use can include:
  • Stretching
  • Exercises
  • Gait re-education
  • Breathing techniques
  • Chest clearance techniques (passive and active)
These physiotherapy treatments for toddlers may vary depending on the reason for referral and the outcome of the assessment.
