Physiotherapy for Upper Back Pain
Upper back pain is when pain occurs in the region known as the thoracic spine. This can occur for a number of reasons. The cause can be due to a traumatic accident or as a repetitive overuse / strain of the surrounding structures. Some of the main causes of upper back pain are:
- Postural adaptations
- Arthritis
- Muscle strain / tear
- Myofascial tension
- Disc protrusion
These injuries can cause the individual a great amount of upper back pain and discomfort. This can prevent them from participating in normal activities of daily living pain free. Upper back pain can be related to a person’s occupation and selected posture. Sedentary occupations can lead to a person developing a poor posture which can result in upper back pain. Physiotherapy can offer treatments to help alleviate pain. Some of the treatments available are:
- Massage
- Manual therapy
- Electrotherapy
- Acupuncture
- Exercise
- Myofascial tissue release
- Postural advice
The aim of the treatment would be to alleviate upper back pain, restore and facilitate normal movement and improve function. The Physiotherapist may offer a self management programme once the upper back pain has settled down.
