Physiotherapy for Upper Leg Pain
Upper leg pain is when pain occurs between the hip and the knee. There can be a number of reasons for the onset of upper leg pain. Some of the most common causes are:
- Muscle strain / rupture
- Ligament sprain / rupture
- Fracture / stress fracture
- Contusion
- Referred pain
- Lower limb joint instability
People from a variety of backgrounds can develop upper leg pain; some injuries are more common in the sporting population such as stress fractures. Upper leg pain can have a debilitating effect on the individual, preventing them from participating in their normal daily tasks. Physiotherapy can help with the rehabilitation process of upper leg pain. After a comprehensive assessment the Physiotherapist may provide the following treatments as necessary:
- Exercise
- Massage and soft tissue manipulation
- Myofascial tissue release
- Electrotherapy
- Acupuncture
- Heat and cold therapy
These treatments can help to alleviate upper leg pain, promote healing and optimise function. Self management strategies can be taught to the individual by the Physiotherapist for the purpose of managing the condition if it returns or has not completely healed upon discharge.
