Physiotherapy for Upper Leg Surgery
Upper leg surgery is a procedure done under either local or general anaesthetic on the thigh, between the knee and hip. There can be many reasons for an individual having to have upper leg surgery. An orthopaedic surgeon will perform the operation with the assistance of their experienced team. Some of the most common upper leg surgical procedures can include:
- Muscle repair
- Tendon repair
- Fracture stabilisation
- Removal of a sarcoma tumour
Upper leg surgery can affect a persons gait and can cause pain on normal movement. There may be some protocols post upper leg surgery such as non weight bearing during gait and set movements / exercises allowed. A rehabilitation programme will be needed post surgery by qualified physiotherapists. They will aim to optimise healing and improve function. Some of the treatments which can be included in the programme are:
- Exercise (range of movement, stretching, strengthening)
- Walking aid provision
- Gait re-education
- Ice therapy
- Acupuncture
- Electrotherapy
- Massage
- Mobilisations
These treatments post upper leg surgery can be used as a combination and may be given as part of a home exercise programme.
