Respiratory Physiotherapy
Respiratory Physiotherapists treat patients who have conditions that affect their lungs and breathing capabilities. This is a specialised area of Physiotherapy care where specific skills need to be developed such as auscultation (listening to the lungs through a stethoscope) and invasive treatments. Some of the common conditions which are seen by Respiratory Physiotherapists are:
- COPD
- Asthma
- Ventilated patients
- Post cardiac surgery
Respiratory Physiotherapy is an important part of a person developing self-management strategies if the condition is a long term problem. Physiotherapists will provide treatments and strategies to help deal with the symptoms and optimise the efficiency of the lungs. Some of the treatments are specialised and can include:
- Active Cycle of Breathing
- Chest clearance techniques
- Increasing exercise tolerance
- Enhancing lung capacity through aids (incentive spirometry, flutter)
- Suction
