Sports Injury Physiotherapy



Sports injury physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy concentrating on predominately musculoskeletal injuries caused through sport. These injuries may be sustained by professional and amateur sports men and women, but can require a higher level of rehabilitation to enable them to return to pre-injury fitness. Some of the most common sports which can induce sports injury physiotherapy with include:
  • Football (professional and amateur)
  • Rugby
  • Athletics
  • Gymnastics
Professional sports teams will quite often have their own physiotherapists to provide sports injury physiotherapy to the athlete. Some of the most common sports injuries seen are:
  • Torn ligaments
  • Muscle strains
  • Fractures
  • Cartilage tears
These injuries can all be rehabilitated with sports injury physiotherapy. This will include a comprehensive assessment; verbal and physical followed by goal setting and treatment sessions. These treatment sessions can include a variety of treatment to rehabilitate the injury to their pre-injury fitness, some of which can include:
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Plyometric exercises
  • Proprioceptive exercises
  • Massage
  • Electrotherapy
  • Hydrotherapy
