Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is the treatment of patients who are suffering from dizziness and nausea. There are a variety of causes but the majority are due to a dysfunction in the inner ear. Vestibular physiotherapy concentrates on re-educating the brain to react appropriately to movements. Some of the movements which can bring on dizziness are:
  • Quick movements
  • Looking up
  • Rolling over in bed
  • Eye movements
These triggers can all have a negative effect on the individual’s lifestyle, preventing them from leading a normal life. These symptoms can be treated with a course of vestibular physiotherapy challenging the brain to get a normal response to certain stimuli. Some of the treatments which can be used for vestibular physiotherapy are:
  • Balance exercises
  • Head movements
  • Eye movement
  • Hand eye co-ordination exercises
Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy which focuses on symptom management and improving independence and function through a variety of treatments. Treatment lengths are unpredictable and dizziness may be reproduced during the sessions of vestibular physiotherapy.
